Tonight, we have JL Lametrie of MC2 Imports in the shop to pour us a selection of wines from his import portfolio. Many years ago, under his old and now retired company name, we hosted JL at my wine bar for an intimate trade tasting of natural wines and no one showed up—who in Los Angeles had heard of natural wine back then, and who cared? The more things change, the more they change. Jean-Luc continues to import a tight, well-curated selection of natural wines, primarily from his home country of France, but now also from Italy. We are tasting a good representation of the treasures he has to offer, including an orange wine made from old vine gargenega, grown on volcanic soil and give 100 days of maceration; a meaty, delicately feral red from the southwest of France made by a Ludovic Bonnelle, a fellow who looks like a drunken sailor having his belly shaved who may very well bite your head off, but looks are deceiving, and he turns out to be genial and garrulous rather than surly and scabrous; and a beautiful, delicate red Burgundy from the brilliant Claire Naudin.
