We took a few week hiatus from our regular Wednesday wine-tasting schedule, but we’re back tonight. For some reason, tasting wine the day after New Year’s Eve just didn’t seem right, at least that’s what my liver told me. And then the fires. And feeling helpless watching our city burn. And feeling grateful that my home and business did not burn, riddled with anxiety that they could while also feeling anguish for those whom we know personally who’ve lost so much. And slowly grasping the multidimensional complexity of the fires’ aftermath; a complexity that I cannot yet wrap my head around and may never will.
The outpouring of love and support for those affected by the fires is gratifying, but there’s a long way to go to make folks whole again. I’m not naïve, and I know that small, performative gestures may be insignificant, but what can you do when the inertia of doing nothing is an impossible stance? Small gestures, in the aggregate, and if you’re equipped to make them, may be meaningful. If you’ve met me at the shop, you’ve likely seen me stop and talk to a customer’s dog— it might be your dog. I love dogs and though I cannot do much, as an individual, to help our city heal, I can raise a little money to help dogs (and cats, and other critters) affected by the Eaton fire. Tonight, all of the wines we’re pouring have animals on their labels, and we’ll donate the proceeds from the tasting to the Pasadena Humane Society. |
